Build your first C++ app

Install

Do you have the latest Windows update?
Make sure that you’ve gone to your Settings or Control Panel, to check and install any available updates before continuing.

Do you have sufficient disk space?
Ensure that you have more than 7 GB of free space (recommended in your C:\ drive) available.

Download Visual Studio 2017 Community

Hint: If your org has >250 PCs or >$1M USD annual revenue, go here to find our Professional and Enterprise offerings.

For this step, you’ll need to find the file that you just downloaded from VisualStudio.com and double-click to run. You may need to go into your downloads folder to find the file. If you’re having issues opening the file, try right-click and “Run as administrator” to work around it.

We’re going to choose to install a workload to create a console app in C++, which is Desktop Development with C++. If you’d like to install other tools, check out the list of all Visual Studio 2017 Workloads.

Now I’m going to select Launch and login with my Microsoft account so my settings will be saved.
Hint: If you don’t already have one, it’s free to create a Microsoft Account.
